Sometime after making the move out here, we realized that my sweet car was probably going to have to go. We get many visitors and have been doing so many home renovations over the last few weeks that a two door coupe, although fun, just wasn’t practical.
So what to do? Cars are generally such an awful purchase, they lose so much value when you buy them new and buying used can be such a nightmare. Certainly, after the move, we weren’t looking to spend any money and wondered what we could get for a straight trade for my car.
One evening, we headed into Kelowna BMW to see what they had on their used (or as dealers like to say “pre-owned”) section of the car lot. They had a silver X3 that seemed nice, although a bit bare bones and we weren’t certain if that would be a good trade. It was closing time, so we left it for the day and headed back in the morning to see it again. When we arrived, there was an amazing looking white X3 beside the silver one, fully loaded and much more luxurious. It drove like a dream, we were really excited, it was only a bit more than the silver one, could this be the trade? Due to a break down in the used car dance, it wasn’t the one for us. Over the course of the next two weeks, I drove a dozen X3s, a couple Acura RDX’s (you really should drive the 2013 if you can…wow), a Mercedes ML350, a couple Ford Explorers, a Honda Pilot and a few other midsize SUVs for good measure.
The dealers all got a kick out of the fact that both Ryan and I are poker players, usually with some bad joke about not being able to bluff us. Still, I think they underestimated the skills we have as poker players. We weren’t as susceptible to the usual high pressure sales tactics that may be effective with the public. We were looking for the spots that had the most desirable pots (or SUV) with the maximum value. We knew how far to push a deal and when to walk away. We still have salesmen calling us with offers! Maybe in a few years fellas!
For now, we are working on figuring out a name for the car…what are your suggestions?
